Introduction

The ASDAN Business Simulation has been created in an effort to help the aspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow grasp a better logistical and strategic understanding of how to run a business. During the simulation students will be actively involved in creating and deciding on every aspect of their business from their company culture to their production needs. The interactive aspect of the simulation is a great way for students to get involved in thinking about the practicalities of running a business.

Leading entrepreneurs of tomorrow: Creating innovative business blueprints to achieve global sustainability

While the ASDAN BS helps students develop their financial, business skills and entrepreneurial mindset, it aims to instill a sense of social responsibility in the young participants. ASDAN hopes to ingrain the concept of sustainability in these future entrepreneurs’ mindset while solving real life problems with their business concepts.

In 2021, ASDAN started to incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as a monthly theme for Business Simulations. Participants are given an ‘SDG Challenge’ and are asked to propose sustainable business solutions focusing on the monthly chosen SDG. They are encouraged to present practical ways to solve numerous global problems. At the end of 2021 over 10,000 students from 400+ schools across China had participated in ASDAN Business Simulations.

2021-22 Spring Semester Academic Themes

Academic Framework of the Month(March 2022)

SDG Challenge

700 million people live in extreme poverty, 10% of the world's population, live on less than $1.90 a day. In fact, 8% of globally employed workers and their families lived in extreme poverty as of 2018. Poverty affects children the most. As of 2018, 55% of the world's population did not have access to social security.

Therefore, as young entrepreneurs, when building your own business empire, how do you use your power to improve the economic opportunities of the poor and help them get out of poverty? How to launch meaningful activities to demonstrate your social responsibility, and how to better meet their basic needs? These are the questions that you need to answer.

Zero Hunger(April 2022)

SDG Challenge

Nearly 690 million people, or 8.9% of the world's population, suffer from malnutrition. The number of hungry people (in terms of the incidence of undernourishment) has been declining for decades, and has been slowly increasing since 2015. It increased by 10 million in one year and nearly 60 million in five years. Following the current trend, more than 840 million people will be affected by hunger.

Therefore, as business owners, while realizing your ideal ambitions, how do you utilize corporate social responsibility so that more people can be saved from hunger.

SDG Challenge

About 260 million children were out of school in 2018, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the world's school-age population. Education can improve socio-economic status and is the key to escaping poverty. Over the past decade, access to education at all levels has increased significantly and enrolment rates have increased significantly, especially for girls. Nonetheless, more than half of the world's children and adolescents do not meet minimum standards of literacy.

Therefore, in the future, all of you, business leaders, must consider not only making a profit, but also find ways to contribute to the sustainable development of quality education in the world, so that more children and adolescents can have the opportunity to be educated.

SDG Challenge

40% of the world's population is affected by water scarcity in their daily lives and this number is expected to increase. Although access to clean drinking water and sanitation has improved considerably, billions of people still lack these basic services, most of them living in rural areas. Nearly a thousand children die every day from preventable diseases caused by water and sanitation issues. More than 1.7 billion people currently live in river basins that use more water than is replenished.

As members of the global community, all future entrepreneurs have the responsibility to contribute to protecting freshwater resources. It is home to a wealth of creatures that determine the survival of life on Earth. Improving water and sanitation is already an urgent matter, so we must act quickly.

2021-22 Autumn Semester Academic Themes

Academic Framework of the Month(March 2021)

SDG Challenge

2019 was the year when the second highest temperature on record was registered, with new levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reaching new highs. Climate change is affecting every country on every continent, destroying national economies and affecting people's lives. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and natural disasters are becoming more wide-spread year after year.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel bans have been imposed everywhere and economic development has slowed down, so greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by about 6% in 2020, but in 2021 during the recovery from the pandemic, the number bounced back up by the exact same 6%. Climate change is still a growing global concern.

Therefore, as young entrepreneurs, when building a potential business empire, how do you plan to balance the relationship between interests and the environment, and how to use the power of business to take the lead in contributing to the positive change of the environment?

The world is facing an unprecedented global health crisis. More and more people are suffering from COVID-19, destabilizing the global economy and disrupting the lives of billions of people around the world.

Therefore, as young entrepreneurs, explain how you will maintain corporate social responsibility and contribute to people's health when building your own business.

The countries of the world are moving towards this goal. There are positive signs that energy generation is becoming more sustainable and more widely available. Electricity supply in developing countries has begun to accelerate, energy efficiency continues to improve around the world, and the share of renewable energy in the electricity supply has increased significantly.

Therefore, as future business leaders, tell us how you will balance profit making and contribution to the development of sustainable energy production in the future.

SDG Challenge

Global consumption and production drive global economic development, but rely heavily on the use of natural resources, and current patterns of use of these resources have had devastating effects on our planet.

Sustainable consumption and production means doing more and better with less, and it also means eliminating the link between economic growth and environmental degradation, improving resource efficiency and promoting sustainable lifestyle. As entrepreneurs, explain how you believe sustainable consumption and production will also contribute to poverty alleviation and the transition to a low-carbon green economy.

Sustained and inclusive economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all, and improve living standards.

The establishment of companies and enterprises can bring a large number of jobs and solve the employment problem for some people; the positive growth of enterprises will also result in higher income. How are you ensuring that your business will contribute to solve this problem?

Academic Framework of the Month(October 2021)

SDG Challenge

The world's oceans, with their temperature, chemical composition, ocean currents and living organisms are the main contributors to the stability of the Earth’s ecosystems and habitats. Rain, drinking water, weather, climate conditions, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe are ultimately provided and regulated by the ocean. Throughout history, it has been an important driver of international travel and trade. Careful management of the oceans, an important global resource, is a major aspect of building a sustainable future. Oceans cover nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface, account for 97 percent of the planet's total water resources, and by volume, account for 99 percent of the ecosystems where organisms can develop on Earth.

Livelihoods of more than 3 billion people depend on a variety of life in the oceans, including many people in developing countries, for whom fishing is the main source of income. Globally, the market value of marine and coastal resources and industries is estimated to be $3 trillion per year, or about 5 percent of global GDP, and an estimated 63 percent of global "ecosystem services" are provided by marine and coastal ecosystems. Marine fisheries directly and indirectly employ more than 200 million people.

Highlight the sustainable development characteristics of the product while considering the product brand, as well as more reasonable countermeasures for the sustainable use of marine resources.

Gender Equality(November 2021)

SDG Challenge

Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a necessary foundation for a prosperous and sustainable world. Gender equality could also enhance business performance. There are several studies that find a positive relationship between a company’s performance and a more diverse board, for example on returns, margins and stock market performance. An improved reputation is a frequently heard argument for companies to support gender equality. How will your ensure gender equality in your business decisions?

Life on Land(December 2021)

SDG Challenge

Some 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on forests for their livelihoods, including 70 million indigenous peoples. More than 80% of the animals, plants and insects on land inhabit forests. About 420 million hectares of woods have been cut down for agriculture and other land uses since 1990. Every year, 12 million hectares of land (at a rate of 23 hectares per minute) are swallowed up by drought and desertification. Such a plot of land could produce 20 million tons of grain. Of the 8,300 known animal breeds, 8% are extinct and 22% are endangered. Illegal hunting and trafficking continue to hamper all conservation efforts, with 120 countries reportedly engaged in illegal trade involving nearly 7,000 species of flora and fauna.

As a future generation of entrepreneurs, it is your mission to take this responsibility, which also opens up numerous business opportunities. In the past, global economic development and prosperity did cause great damage to the environment. What is your vision for the protection of life on land and how are you implementing it in your business decisions?
